I will add the blog links to my site as well.

THE FULL LENGTH VIDEO:

"In the Studio with Ian Narcisi: The Making of Phone Call to Infinity" is COMPLETE!

I finally got around to finishing this one! Don't be fooled by the identical "Sneak Peek" intro. I left it the same to save myself about a months worth of time reediting.

Within the full version video "In the Studio..." are interviews with Dave Bowers (guitar) and Erik Swanson (bass) as well as many other interviews with Tim and myself.

To witness the magic: go to my main page on my website (ianmusic.com), or YouTube. The entire video was shot in HD, so make sure to set your web settings to a 720p (HD) in your YouTube window.

Enjoy!

MORE T-SHIRTS!:

Due to popular demand I have added some new T shirt designs and mug designs to my Zazzle store ("Phone Call to Infinity" and "Come of Age [New Sun]"). "Come of Age (New Sun)" design by none other than my wife.

WHAT'S NEXT?:

What is next is blowing my mind! I have 24 new songs - some completed, some not - that will be molded and crafted into a concept album. This is a daunting task to say the least! The concept album will be comprised of both instrumental and non-instrumental songs that I have written/will be writing (I may swap newer songs that I haven't even written yet for some of the older ones). The overall theme will be non-religious, spiritually-based and will really kick some serious ass when completed!

I will be releasing a few songs during 2012 that will be from the concept album.

I expect the whole enchilada to be completed some time in early 2013.

I may add a few talents to the mix. Dave and Erik will be the backbone. I will be writing all the lyric/song material, playing all drums parts, key parts and singing all vocals.

I will have to out do myself in 2014 with a quadruple CD concept album (only joking?)

Stay tuned and stay safe!

Happy New Year! 2012 is going to kick my musical ass and I can't wait!

Ian

--

Progressive rock from a Chicago indie musician who wants to help the world awaken
Ian Narcisi
Progressive Rock indie musician
Singer/songwriter, drummer, keyboardist
Erik Swanson (bass), Dave Bowers (guitar), Tim Sandusky (co-producer and sound engineer) and myself (singer/songwriter, drums, keyboards) spent a week crafting this song. "Come of Age (New Sun)" is layered with shifting tempos, intensity and serenity. I really love this one! Tim is feverishly working his magic mixing and mastering to make this song what it needs to be. I am looking at a release date of November 12th.

I will give all of you fine listeners a chance to listen and download the song in its entirety for free Friday, November 11th. The making of Phone Call to Infinity" (the full version) will be completed during the last week of this month (November 2011). Like the "Sneak Peak" I release back in July 2011, the full version will be released on YouTube as well. Added to "Sneak Peak" will be interviews with Erik Swanson (bass), Dave Bowers (guitar) as well as candid conversations between Tim Sandusky (co-producer and sound engineer) and myself revealing possible future trends my music will take and why I do what I do.

Special thanks to Bob Rice at KYRS "Thin Air Community Radio" for the March 18th, 2012 Crossroads live telephone interview. I can't wait! Stay tuned!

Tonight (Saturday, November 5th, 2011) is a very special night for me! My wife and I will be thoroughly enjoying The Musical Box' rendition of Genesis' 1974 masterpiece "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" at The Vic Theater in downtown Chicago. For one reason or another; I am not one of those who goes out of my way to see tribute bands very often, however, "The Musical Box" not only covers the music of Genesis precisely, they emulate all costumes, instruments, playing styles of the former members as well as, on occasion, have the actual members of Genesis jump up on stage and play along! Now that is how it is done! Phil Collins, when watching "The Musical Box" in Geneva (2005) commented, "they played it better than we did." And Peter Gabriel took his children to a show so, "they could see what their father used to do." I seriously and pumped for this!
All is good in the world and it's getting better every second!

Ian

Progressive rock from a Chicago indie musician who wants to help the world awaken
Ian Narcisi
Progressive Rock indie musician
Singer/songwriter, drummer, keyboardist
www.ianmusic.com
http://iannarcisi.blogspot.com/
www.myspace.com/ianmuzic
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ian-Narcisi/161379568011?ref=ts
http://twitter.com/IanNarcisi
www.last.fm/music/Ian+Narcisi/Weight+Of+The+Words
www.last.fm/music/Ian+Narcisi/Feel+No+Evil
http://iannarcisi.posterous.com
http://www.thesixtyone.com/iannai29/#/iannai29/
Reviews:

http://www.musicstreetjournal.com/index_cdreviews_display.cfm?id=103166

http://www.musicstreetjournal.com/index_cdreviews_display.cfm?id=103165

http://www.musicstreetjournal.com/index_cdreviews_display.cfm?id=103172
http://evanstonroundtable.com/main.asp?SectionID=4&SubSectionID=4&ArticleID=3434&TM=80931.68

http://www.reviewyou.com/cdreviewblog/ian-narcisi-weight-of-the-words/
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4918#discography
http://www.reviewyou.com/cdreviewblog/ian-narcisi-feel-no-evil/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iannarcisi.blogspot.com/2011/11/of-age-new-sun-release-date.html' title='"Come of Age (New Sun)" I can only wait so long before I have to get off my ass and record a new song. I will be recording a new song at Studio Ballistico with the same guy's starting next week. Both Erik (bass) and Dave (guitarist) now have the latest rough (and I mean rough) draft to work with prior to going into the studio.

This one is a bit different than the rest as it has a quicker tempo and has room for intense vocals. As always, this one has room for intense creativity as well which I always encourage to Erik, Dave and Tim and they never dissapoint! To put it simply: I am totally excited about this one!

I plan on having this song completed by the 23rd of this month. I will be releasing it for sale on my site as wel as CDBaby, Amazon, Napster, etc during the last week of this month, or early November.

The full length video "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi. The Making of Phone Call to Infinity" is still sitting there on my hard drive staring at me and sighing every so often. I don't blame it! I'd be pissed too if I was neglected for so long! I plan on getting this polished up and uploaded to YouTube by the end of this month, or early to mid November. It's almost complete. It just needs my fingers on the keyboard and time.

More songs are on the way in the upcoming months! I will keep you posted :~)!

See ya!

Ian

In with the new...always

Ok...so the full-length video "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi. The Making of Phone Call to Infinity" still isn't out. I apologize for this. Mid October guaranteed.
I have contacted the "make-it-happen-with-creativity-and-spontaneity-crew" to record a single starting in mid October. I will be sending three or so rough drafts of my new songs to Tim to see which one he feels will work. 96.78888% of the time I agree with his decision and within a month we will have a completed song. I am just as excited as I have been for all the songs I have written in the past! I love this period of time in the creative process! Just knowing one of my songs will be sanded, polished and presented to the public is very exciting! This one will be a doosy! I'd like to be able to belt it out vocally like "Behind the Dawn" with more of an upbeat tempo. I may write a new song tomorrow just to get what I hear and want in my head. The 16 new songs I have on my hard drive recorder may not cut it. You will find out soon enough!
Such an odd day! Smoke in the air everywhere. When I first smelled the air I thought that there was some sort of chemical leak, or massive toxic fire occurring somewhere nearby. A guy I talked to at lunch thought the same. He shut his windows and doors to his business for fear of such an event. Ultimately it turned out to be a fire alright, but in northern....yeah get this.....MINNESOTA! The friggin' Boundary Waters were ablaze! And since a cold front (one of two) hit today, it brought with it cooler air, northerly winds and smoke from those fires! What was odd was that the smoke didn't smell like forest fire smoke. It smelled like cough syrup. Sweet and nasty. Anyway, yeah, that's what it was. Something that just doesn't happen around here everyday. The sunset, I later heard and expected, was amazing! Smoke in mass quantities always does amazing things to the sunsets! Volcanic events as well. Just the way light refracts off the smoke particles A must see!
Ok...I am nearing tome status here. Must go, watch something about space, astrophysics, meteorology, dendrochronology, or something with "ology" tailing it.....
Until we meet again....
Ian
Posted via email from Ian Narcisi's posterous

Video, music and more!

Ok, here's the deal....
The full-length version of "In the Studio with Ian Narcisi. I have a lot going on in my life right now that is taking precedence over this labor of love.
My next visit to the studio looks to be somewhere around November. I am planning another 3 song EP that will most likely be released in January 2012.
I am planning another major road trip to the west. This time it looks like the target location is eastern California. Mileage should tally up to around 6,500 miles. Bob is so persistent and dead on when it comes to helping us independent musicians get the word out! He really is making his mark in the world! "Guerilla Music Marketing Online" is saturated with great, well researched facts and is a definite must for any independent musician - highly recommended!
Thank you Bob!
IN THE STUDIO DOCUMENTARY:
The audio/video editing for my upcoming documentary is still in the works. I figure late June, or early July before this is ready to be uploaded. This is my first attempt at editing such a large piece of work! I am enjoying it immensely!

NEXT APPROXIMATE RELEASE DATE:
Nothing in stone at this point. I would like to start in June on my next release. I'm planning on the "one-song-per-month" process as this is the most affordable and certainly allows for more time to focus on each song. This process worked very well for "Phone Call to Infinity". No plans at this point to play my music live, but I certainly can't rule this out. I still would love to record Dave, Erik, a drummer, and myself live with the magical, musical mind of Tim.

OTHER THINGS THAT ARE COMPLETELY UNRELATED:
Spring finally has arrived in Chicago! This past April was like a mix of February and March. May is looking and feeling more and more like May. My storm chasing alarms are beginning to chime again. I would love to get back out to the Plains in 2012! Hopefully I can! It's been since 2006 since I last chased.
Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's around the orb!
~ Ian ~
Posted via email from Ian Narcisi's posterous

Studio documentary video coming to a server near you

I haven't started this puppy yet, but my ultimate goal is to edit hours of video footage chop them up and neatly place them into a Studio Ballistico documentary video. The documentary video will reveal to the masses how creating a song in the studio is achieved. I picked "Five Below Nothing" from my latest EP "Phone Call to Infinity" (recorded in October of 2010) as the song used for the documentary. The footage will feature Erik Swanson (bass), Dave Bowers (guitar), Tim Sandusky (co-producer/sound engineer), and myself (drums, keyboards, vocals) in our natural habitat. Individual interviews, creative discussions and individual performance clips will all be intertwined within this upcoming documentary.
Not exactly sure when this will be released. I'm guessing late April '11, but will settle for August.
More songs are on the stove right now. Some are completely warm and ready to serve. Others are miles away from even the back burners (still at the grocery store). I'm looking at summer studio time and a late summer release.
I hope all is well where ever you are.
Ian
Posted via email from Ian Narcisi's posterous

My latest physical EP "Phone Call To Infinity" now available at ianmusic.com

The physical CD's (two sided jacket with graphic on CD) of my latest EP "Phone Call To Infinity" have arrived and look fantastic! I recorded the drums, keys and vocals last on Sunday, November 14th, Erik laid down the bass track Wednesday, November 17th, Dave added his magic guitar playing (electric and acoustic) Thursday, November 18th and Tim and I mixed down and mastered the song Sunday, November 21st (Tim is absolutely amazing at what he does!). Now that all three songs ("Absent Today", "Five Below Nothing", and "Behind The Dawn") are finished, it's time to get this music out to the masses! My goal is to have my 3 song EP (not titled as of yet) released on my web site (www.ianmusic.com), CDBaby and iTunes either the second, or third week in December. I have yet to take the photo that will set the overall theme to this EP and my wife and I need some time to get all the graphics laid out, but, as always, we will get to it.
The HD video will have to wait as my PC (named "Bad Ass") took a dive. My new PC parts arrive Friday and I should have "Bad Ass II" (wow, how original!) built the same day. So, this weekend may be a video editing extravaganza! This would be perfect seeing that Chicago may have its first weekend covered in snow with high's this coming Friday in the 20's (we were in the 60's yesterday with tornadoes nearby!) Welcome to Chicago's winter! I love it! :~)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Ian
Posted via email from Ian Narcisi's posterous

New song to be recorded next week!

Just to keep you all informed....
My website was down temporarily for maintenance purposes. My latest song which was completed last week entitled "Five Below Nothing" will not be released until mid December. It will be placed along side my recently released song "Absent Today" and my third song (to be recorded in mid November) and all will be released as one, big, happy EP. My plan is to print 50 EP CD's and have these available for purchase via my site (ianmusic.com), CDBaby and iTunes. And, like all the releases preceeding, I will be out, camera and all, finding the perfect shot for the cover. My wife and I will be designing the overall graphical theme for the CD and website. As far as digital downloads are concerned; my goal is to have my EP available digitally by mid to late December from the aforementioned sites.

...and there's plenty more where that came from: I have 15 other songs on the back burner! I have 10 hours of in-the-studio HD video which also includes live interviews with Tim, Erik, Dave and myself (I will be editing all this into a documentary some time in the winter) and I plan on releasing another 3 song EP in May 2011. It took Tim (co-producer/sound engineer), Dave (guitarist), and Erik (bass) and I a good 4 days to record, mix and master. I must say am quite proud of this one!! Everyone did such a fantastic job! My drums didn't require any tuning!!! Seriously! I pulled them out of their cases after over a year (kept them in my storage room) and lo and behold - perfectly tuned! Keyboards were a snap considering I didn't even have to lift a finger. I simply recorded them on my Tascam recorder at home and uploaded them to Tim who then added them to the studio tracks!! Gotta love that!!! I really hope you enjoy "Absent Today"!!! This will be the day I record the drum tracks, vocals and some other things I can't mention (surprise) for my next 3 - song EP. No title for the EP just yet, however, "Absent Today" will definitely be one of the three songs. The following week will include visits from Erik Swanson (bass), Dave Bowers (guitar) and Tim Sandusky (co-producer, sound engineer and musician). "Absent Today" should be complete by the end of August. I am planning song 2 (completed on keyboard and drums on my home digital recorder) to be recorded at Studio Ballistico in October and song 3 in November. I have 14 new songs in the making. Nine songs are ready for drums and vocals. Five songs are a simple melody that will turn into full-blown songs in the weeks and months to come. It's this ninth song that is challenging me big time. I pushed myself to the limit on this one! "Heavy", solo parts at the end (piano). By "heavy" I mean "physically challenging". I have to actually practice my chromatic rises and descending arpeggio's to pull this one off. I know that it will all pay off in the end. Once complete it is on to the next five. I have simple melodies and chordal changes and due to this may jump straight into drums adding the keys later. I really do love writing songs on piano, but sometimes you just gotta get the hell away from it before all the songs start sounding like.....well......piano songs.
Studio time? Not in the plans at this point in time. I was thinking of some live stuff (and still am), but not sure when this will all come about. Another victim of the recession. I got out of that pit a month ago, but you know; these things take time to heal. So, as a result everything has been pushed back. No biggie. I will just keep on writing and recording at home until I can give Tim, Erik and Dave a call and we will begin working on the next album. Life is auspicious................
Posted via email from Ian Narcisi's posterous

Chicago Blizzard Tuesday?? (2.9.2010)

The weather geek in me always peaks whenever I see a significant weather event coming together. Tuesday's (2.9.2010) potential snow storm in Chicago is no exception. As it looks now two low pressure systems (one heading south southeast from Manitoba, Canada and one from the southwest US) are to merge somewhere over north central Missouri some time Monday evening (2.8.2010). The exact track of this storm is not written in stone, but given the right scenario (i.e. the storm tracks through southern Illinois, north Kentucky) Chicago has the potential to receive 6 to 10 inches of snow. To potentially add insult to injury, lake effect may play a part in this storm as well. As the slow-moving mesocyclone shifts east a strong east, northeast wind will develop. With the cold wind howling over the relatively-speaking mild, 34-degree Lake Michigan waters heavy snow squalls could form buffeting Lake, Cook, DuPage and even McHenry counties with even more snow (at this point in time the National Weather Service is predicting 8 to 12 inches in the aforementioned counties.)
From what I have witnessed over the past 33 years (yes, I have been a geek this long) this merging of two mesocyclones (aka low pressure systems) to form one blockbuster storm is a rare occurrence. Even more amazing is how the massive blizzard that recently nailed the central Appalachians two days ago is so similar to what is about to occur here in the Midwest! This weather scenario too was a culmination of two mesocyclones merging which were further intensified by strong jet streaks (areas of very strong wind within a given jetstream). On the edges of these jet streaks are areas of intense lift. Within a given winter storm these jet streaks create incredible snow amounts due to intense, vertical lift (Dulles International Airport's very recent record of 32.4 inches of snow over a two day period! This massive amount of snow shattered their January 7, 8, 1996 two-day snow record total by 9.2 inches!!).
If you are reading this, live in Chicago, or anywhere near Chicago (Winter Storm Watches are popping up more and more all over the Midwest, Ohio Valley, Pennsylvania, Maryland [yes, potentially Washington D.C. again]) please keep abreast of what is inevitable - A BIG ONE!!
CHECK OUT ALL THE WATCHES AND WARNINGS DUE TO THESE/THIS STORM(S)!
Take care everyone,
Ian

Posted via email from Ian Narcisi's posterous

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iannarcisi.blogspot.com/2010/02/chicago-blizzard-tuesday-292010.html' title='Chicago Blizzard Tuesday?? I am about to finish the keyboard parts for song 8 (roughly titled "Tricky Fingers" because it was a bitch to learn!) Songs 1 through 7's keyboard parts are done. Some of the drum tracks are also complete. My goal is to have 10 brand spankin' new songs (all tracks [keys, drums and all vocals/lyrics] completed by mid February (by "brand new" I'm talkin' "NOT including 'Feel No Evil' songs". The 5 from that EP will stay on that EP).

Now it get's REALLY exciting!! Ready?

I never actually planned on recording live with the guys I record with in the studio, but it is looking more and more like we will this March. The funny thing is - it will be "live" in the studio! (sorry to disappoint some. No live shows just yet). This "live" thing is in the fetal stages now. What I would like to do is record perhaps 3 or 4 older songs "live" in the studio and add them to the future full-length. I mean we're talkin' a possible grand total of 14 friggin' songs here folks! No lie! Not sure which 3 or 4 songs just yet (perhaps "Forever Today", "Trouble Free", "Sparkle and Shine" and "Burning"? That all depends if Erik [bass] and Dave [guitar] can have a spare bass/guitar on the side when the "tune-down" sections hit.) No tricks here. I want as little editing done as possible. That is how I have always been. When I record a keyboard part I make damn sure I truly can play through it in the most polished way possible (as if I were going to play it live the next day) prior to actually recording it. So "live" will be "live" in the sense of "no bullshit - I'm talkin' like: "We can play these songs 'live' if we had to without a hitch." No manipulation (editing, correcting notes, blah, blah, blee) to the tracks. On top of that will be an HD video of the whole shebang! This will be our debut on YouTube and anywhere else for that matter. I am not messing around here!

Not sure when this full-length will be ready for the outside world (guessing September 2010? May put the live stuff out a lot sooner.)

So keep an eye, ear and sixth sense peeled because here we come! :~)

Ian

India and its influence

It comes as no surprise that I found myself in India last month. Ever since I was a teen I was drawn to its people and its music. I won't delve into the trip itself. I'd rather write about how my 21- day adventure influenced my approach to music.

I heard a lot of Indian music while I was there. Most of the music was Indian pop, but every so often some Indian classical influence emerged.

Other than the fact that The Beatles were heavily influenced by it in the late 60's thanks to master sitar player Ravi Shankar (Amazingly, Ravi Shankar turns 90 this April 7th and he is still jammin'!), I honestly know very little about Indian music.

I took some incredible courses when studying at The American Conservatory of Music in Chicago (African Drumming with a Ethiopian tribe leader) and at Elmhurst College (World Music), yet nothing compared to watching a performance live in its native country.

I certainly know that Indian music has a profound affect on my emotions. No doubt there is something going on here on a much deeper level. Incorporating it into my songs comes naturally. I have been incorporating it into my music long before I went to India. ("Forever Today", "Trouble Free" and "Stargazer" definitely have this influence).

Currently I have a couple of new, Indian influenced songs on my future full-length release (postponed until the summer of 2010).

My Indian experience was amazing! I plan to share it with you through my music in the years to come. World music has always influenced me and the more I delve into it the more it is reflected in my music. So keep an ear out the next time you listen and let me know how my music influences you and what influences to hear! I would love to know! And, please - if you have any world music suggestions please share!

Next EP is slowly becoming next full - length CD!

Things are really coming together these days! I was planning on having a 3 song EP recorded in January 2010. Much to my surprise, it looks as though I am well on the way to creating a brand new full - length album! Six new songs are currently on the menu three of which came to life in the last two weeks! One of the six songs is over ten minutes in length! Prior to leaving to India for three weeks in December, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more tunes pop out of nowhere.

Recording times for this next full - length (yeah, that's right - I am already calling it a full - length), may have to be pushed back. In the event this occurs I am looking at a possible late spring/early summer release in 2010.

Musician's will once again include Erik Swanson (bass) and Dave Bowers (guitar). Tim Sandusky will, once again, pour his heart and soul into the sound engineering process and co-producing. Tim may even add some more Maui Xaphoon as well! Depending on the circumstances this winter I may consider adding some other musician's as well.

I haven't forgot about the Yellowstone sounds I recorded back in September 2009. I will be adding some of these samples to one or more of my upcoming songs. With badge in hand, I found a seat directly in the thick of it all. In a strange twist of irony, I happened to have a job interview earlier that same day. Because of that, 4 p.m. was the earliest I could get there. It didn't matter. The important thing was that I showed up! What a thrill! These few words are all that is necessary to describe my adventures when I walked through the front doors of the Park West situated just north of the loop in downtown Chicago.

Right out of the gate I found a comfy seat. I caught the tail end of the panel called the " The Creative Process and Radical Differentiation". Despite the fact that it was nearly over by the time I got in, I still absorbed a lot from it! The next panel, " Your Live Show & Tour: Simple Steps to Cut Through the Glut & Reach the Magic 300 Ticket Mark" began. The panel members, Martin Atkins, Tour:Smart; Invisible Records, Joe Carsello, The Metro (prominent Chicago club), and others, took the stage. Two large video screens mounted on either side of the stage began to fill up with messages sent from audience members’ cell phones in the wireless abyss. Tom Silverman (Tommy Boy Entertainment and a whole slew of other music business related careers) gave his final words including a proverb from a prominent Native American, which was very moving. The New Music Seminar wrapped up as neatly as it unfolded.

After the panels ended, the lights came up and room became a Schmooza-torium (yes, that’s what they called it). New contacts and friends were soon made by attendees and panel member alike. I recognized a few faces. CyberPR founder and social networking/PR master Ariel Hyatt was someone I was curious to meet. I read her "Music Success in Nine Weeks", watched her YouTube interviews with guys like Derek Sivers (founder of CD Baby and an old high school acquaintance), and admired her aggressive, yet honest approach to helping Indie musician's get their names out there.

I recognized Ariel from across the room and knew that it was now or never. I had to meet her! This was it! I had to overpower the music on stage to grab her attention. I called her name and she immediately turned and smiled. She greeted me with a kind hello and I introduced myself. Just to point out how kind she is, she immediately grabbed her camera and took a picture of us!

Unfortunately, there was just too much going on at the time to actually have a conversation. Ariel was surrounded by names like Michael Spiegelman (head of Yahoo! Music), Lou Plaia (co-founder of ReverbNation), and the list went on and on! I respected her space and moved on to talk with local artists . I hope one day to get another chance to talk to her in person. I wasn't looking for a PR person at the time (however things will be changing in the months to come). But I am definitely considering approaching Ariel simply based on the great energy and positive attitude I felt from her.

Simply put, I appreciate and respect those out there who are helping sculpt the new music business and supporting independent musicians like me. I want to thank the organizers of the NMS. I hope they have this even next year (and I plan not to have a job interview on the same day). And a huge thanks to Ariel for coming to Chicago and for her efforts in propelling indie musicans to new heights!

If you’d like to learn about the NMS, please visit this link.

And if you’d like to learn about Ariel Hyatt and her Cyber PR services, please visit this link.

Did you attend the New Music Seminar in Chicago? All piano (Kurzweil's PC1x' Grand Piano sample was the final selection), this time with some bizarre-ass background sound I also found on the PC1x, but this time off of the vintage chip. It is quite a menacing tone to say the least! I like to plop good tones/happy melodies with scary/combative underlying layers at times - creates tension. It makes you squirm for the duration - making your subconscious mind wriggle and pray for resolution! :~)

Once I snap this aforementioned juxtaposed set of melodies into the correct location on my Tascam I will have completed 3 new songs (keyboard tracks for the most part), and will move on to the Vdrums for all rhythm/beat tracks. Really? Out of nowhere? I beg to differ! For one thing nowhere is just that. How can a something be yanked out of nothing? This is preposterous! Order in the court!

Well, not really. Nowhere is a loose term we all use when we can't wrap our heads around something we can't hear, see, taste, or feel. We are all guilty of using this popular word: "It just came out of nowhere, he's going nowhere fast", or "we're on a road to nowhere".

Songwriting is no exception. A melody from "out of the blue" comes into your head, your hands tap out a rhythm you may have never heard before, or you begin humming what you thought was a familiar tune only to find out later it came from....well.....nowhere. Why is this? Who's really the orchestrator behind all this?

For me personally, I feel that it is a combination of spirit and human experience which leads to human emotion which leads to in some - melody, rhythm, and lyrics. Spirit's definition is not an easy one. I personally feel there exists an invisible connection to and from everything. If you are made up of atoms you are part of this (yes, even a brick has its part!)

A song comes to me in pieces. I grab a melody out of "nowhere" by striking non-thought out, random chords on my keyboard. Once I get two or more chords working in my head and that "feeling" of what I call "spiritual emotion" kicks in; the beginning of a song is born. So is the initial spark of the song truly coming from nowhere? No! I have answered this question in the second and third sentence of this paragraph: ("by striking non-thought out, random chords on my keyboard. Once I get two or more chords working in my head and that "feeling" of what I call "spiritual emotion" kicks in; the beginning of a song is born.") Ah, hah! Nowhere no longer exists!

But what about this "spiritual emotion"? What the hell is it? Is this somehow different from emotion? The answer to this is simply - Yes. I define spiritual emotion as an emotion which lies at the epicenter of emotion. Spiritual emotion has tendrils connecting anger to glee, elation to depression and sadness to sassy. From where is it derived? My belief is that it is derived from a human-to-sound vibration that we all posses. If your spiritual vibrations within lay between a couple vibrating chords your body will resonate, thus a feeling will arise (any feeling....I unconsciously gravitate towards the positive in my music).

I really have no proof of what my previous paragraph describes. I only know what I personally feel when I listen to someone's music, or my own. That feeling of oneness with the song, the ebb and flow of aliveness within, the pain, the pleasure, how I can relate to it. Nowhere is attainable. Nowhere comes from somewhere after all!

The division: Left vs. Right

This is always a challenge for me: How can I balance my left and right sides of my brain? My eyes pooled, my energy became focused and like Charlie, reading each line was like opening the chocolate bar eagerly awaiting what lay inside; I was on the highest of highs! What a wonderful review! My first true review and you really can't start off much better that this!

Album Title: Weight of the Words

Artist Name: Ian Narcisi

Reviewed By: Rhonda Readence

Any progressive rock lover will be absolutely delighted by Ian Narcisi’s extremely well-crafted album Weight Of The Words. The album starts out with an otherworldly intro that brings to mind space odysseys and time travel. The intro slides smoothly into the opening track, “Twilight’s Last,” which begins with a melodic journey of keys and guitars and expert musicianship. We know from the get-go that Ian Narcisi is not your average artist and that this is most certainly not your every day music.

As “Twilight’s Last” continues, we are greeted by Ian’s vocals which further emphasize the fact that we are in for one hell of a ride with this album. Throughout the song the space odyssey theme persists and Ian treats us to a wide range of vocal talent that, at times, seems to emulate aliens speaking.

After the dramatic opening track, we might feel a sense of anticipation at what is next, along with a mild sense of anxiety when we consider the fact that the rest of that album can’t possibly measure up to “Twilight’s Last.” Ian proves us wrong, of course, with the beginning of “Veil” which starts off with only vocals and no instruments. Then crystal clear guitar work shines through the sound of falling rain. We might be reminded of Pink Floyd while listening to this song, specifically early Pink Floyd. “Veil” is a melodic piece of art that captures us completely.

“Burning” is also rather Floydian and Ian’s voice brings to mind the esteemed Mr. David Gilmour. This song is soft and flowing and the piano really gives it what it needs. The lyrics are rather thought provoking as well. Ian’s sings, “Rivers of cigarette butts fill the streets, plastic bags launched helpless through the trees…” It makes me think of a desolate inner city landscape in the dead of fall under steel grey skies. Between the lyrics and the music, this song can’t get much better, but it does. Cue harmonica. Nice touch.

The fourth track is a truly ingenious instrumental piece titled “Along For The Ride.” Indeed. Aptly titled. We are being taken along for a ride on this one; A ride that consists of extraordinary soundscapes that rival some of the best musicians I’ve ever heard. Each instrument rings out clearly without being obvious. The music sounds very nearly perfect in my headphones, and I find that if I close my eyes I can hear it better. I can almost SEE it. This song is entirely too short. It should continue indefinitely.

“Throw It Away” transports us from the dreamy soundscape of “Along For The Ride” and takes us directly into Italy or perhaps Spain. The guitar work on this song is phenomenal and “Throw It Away” will be sure to get people dancing some sort of Latin dance that is complicated and beautiful. The background vocals on this song are exceedingly well done and they compliment Ian’s voice beautifully. Salsa, anyone?

The next track, “Unified,” begins with a funky bass line that is soon accompanied by guitars and drums and instruments of every kind in this spacey creation. Another amazingly well-crafted instrumental, “Unified” has an almost holy feel to it, with an underlying current of sensuality. An odd combination, perhaps, but one that works exceedingly well. This song is a show of brilliance.

“Around To Face You” has a melody to it that vaguely resembles I Love The Night by Blue Oyster Cult. It’s not overly obvious, but since that is one of my favorite songs I was able to pick up on it. “Around To Face You” is a difficult song to describe because there is so much going on here. This song cannot be properly placed in a category, or a box, as it were. Not being able to categorize a song means that it is truly diverse with regards to musical influence and that it is a well rounded piece of music. There’s so much happening in this song, and it all comes together surprisingly well, that we could conceivably listen to it multiple times and probably hear new things each time.

Track eight, “Quevlar’s Journey,” is another instrumental that is beautifully engineered. This song, like much of the album (especially the other instrumentals), has a space-like essence to it that reverberates with unworldly images and sounds. Each transition is as smooth and seamless as glass as Ian takes us through the various stages of “Quevlar’s Journey.” Yet another nearly prefect show of musicianship and talent.

The next song, “Cold Rain,” is a melancholy piece of music with guitar work that could rival David Gilmour. This is a sad song that gives me chills and the lyrics are heartbreakingly beautiful. Ian shows off his vocal talent exceedingly well in this song, but there is something going on in the background. There are words being said, as if through a phone with a bad connection. Try as I might, I can’t quite hear what is being said in the background. I can pick out a word here and there, but I can’t get it all. “Cold Rain” is probably my favorite song so far, and I wish I could hear what that odd and alien voice is saying.

“Forever Today” starts off dramatically. The short intro reminds of an old black and white movie and I can’t even say exactly why. It sounds very ominous, but once the song gets going, that ominous feeling fades. It doesn’t leave completely, it just fades a little. Ian’s voice holds a touch of urgency and the piano seems to add to this feeling. The lyrics too give us a feeling that something either terrifically great or terribly tragic is about to happen.

Song eleven, “Trouble Free,” has some excellent piano work to take us into the soft, swaying beat and the calming vocals. This is a great song to listen to enclosed in someone’s arms, feeling fine and free. “Trouble Free” is one of those warm-n-fuzzy songs that just seem to make the day a little better and perhaps brighter than it was before. I especially enjoy the break at around the three minute mark when we think the song is over, but not yet. Ian takes us into some stellar instrumental work and then comes back strong with the closing of “Trouble Free.”

The song “Raid 5” is another instrumental that showcases the undeniable talent of Ian Narcisi and the other musicians. This song has a bit of a twist to it though, and we are taken into the future for a brief moment with the almost creepy sounding voices of what appear to be robots. It definitely has a sci-fi feel to it, while still managing to maintain the melodic mastery that the rest of the album radiates.

The closing song, “Violet And Blue,” sums up the album Weight Of The Words perfectly. It’s slightly melancholy, a bit space aged, and thoroughly and completely well done. Ian Narcisi is an artist of the highest regard and his album clearly shows this. I have rarely, if ever, heard an album in which the sound quality is as good as this. Weight Of The Words puts to shame some big name acts who can afford to spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on top of the line recording equipment. And who knows? Maybe Ian did too, but I don’t think so. I think Ian simply knows what sounds good and has a talent that is nothing short of a gift. Weight Of The Words is an extremely well thought out album that sounds indescribably incredible.

More music on the back burner. This weekend I will complete the 3rd of three songs (keys only). If I get an extra half an hour I will add the vdrums and vocals will be next week!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://iannarcisi.blogspot.com/2009/07/absolute-thrill-great-review-this-made.html' title='An absolute thrill!! Not exactly sure when I will be releasing this one - most likely in the spring of 2010.

Feel No Evil (5-song EP) is doing quite well, but I would like to get the online radio world to further push these songs from this EP as well as Weight Of The Words for that matter!

Promotion has taken precedence for now. I will be working with a online publicist very soon.
